Shiann Darkangelo nets pair of goals, helping lead T6 to shutout victory over seventh-place Beauts
On February 4, at Canlan Sports – York, the Toronto Six (women’s pro hockey team) defeated the Buffalo Beauts by a final score of 3-0 in the third of four meetings on the 2022-23 PHF calendar.
“I really liked our defense, I think they played their best game this year so far,” said Geraldine Heaney, Head Coach of the Toronto Six. “They worked together, they’re getting to know each other a little bit better like that, and obviously Shi [Shiann Darkangelo], our captain, it was nice to see her be successful. She needs to be a little bit more selfish, and when she starts to shoot the puck, she can score. And I think she just needed that confidence.”
Looking to re-establish their dominance in the second half of the PHF’s QEW rivalry, captain Shiann Darkangelo wired a laser top corner from below the left-side circle, beating Lovisa Berndtsson for her fifth goal of the season just over three minutes into the second period.
“The first one, I was just looking to shoot, I saw the top of the net, so I got that one on net and it went in,” Darkangelo explained after the game.”
“Shi buried a couple there, which was awesome to see with her good, hard shot,” said Lindsay Eastwood of her captain’s performance. “She got the puck and she shot the puck, and that’s important. I know it sounds basic, but putting pucks on net goes a long way. I don’t want to quote Mr. Gretzky there, but we all know it. Obviously it’s nice to get some points, but it’s even better to just get the win.”
Representing the game’s only goal through the first 40 minutes of play, the Six were quick to build on that one-goal lead, as forward Michela Cava connected with Darkangelo posted at the right side dot, who beat Berndtsson five-hole to put Toronto up 2-0 with her sixth goal of the season.
“The second goal, I was at the top of the circle, [Michela] Cava had it and set me up with a nice pass,” Darkangelo said after the game. “I was actually looking to go high there, and the puck hit off of something and still went into the net, so we were able to capitalize.
“It was a good team win,” Darkangelo exclaimed. “I think at our last home game, we were a little bitter about it, so just coming out, trying to take control of the game, get shots on net, and good things happen, and that’s what happened. Cava set me up with a nice pass there, and we were able to capitalize, so that allows us to walk away with some points and get ready for tomorrow to do the same thing.”
“Shiann is a strong leader, she’s always positive and able to get the girls going,” said Cava of her team’s fearless leader. “Never really a bad thing to say about her. She always is doing the right thing, works hard, and is definitely easy to follow by her example.”
Adding one last goal with less than a minute remaining in regulation play, Michela Cava padded her team’s lead with her sixth goal of the season to provide extra insurance, which capped a big afternoon and propelled The Toronto Six en route to a dominant 3-0 victory.
“I think we played a pretty good game all around,” remarked Cava of her team’s collective effort. “Definitely we can improve and play better as a whole, like we always can, but we’ll take the three points and get ready for tomorrow.”
“We’re on home ice, so I think we took advantage of our home ice today,” said Eastwood after the game. “We have a bigger rink, so that’s a key component in our game, but also just playing up when you know there’s a big game on the line. We get fired up for it, and we showed up and played as a team. I think that’s the most important part, we just came together as a team and everyone was rolling.”
Making her eleventh start of the regular season in the series rubber match, Chuli made 26 saves between the pipes in the winning effort.
The Toronto Six look to sweep the season series on Sunday afternoon, as they face the Beauts in the series rubber match at 2:00 p.m. EST. The game will be available for viewing on ESPN+ in the United States, and on TSN Direct for viewers tuning in across Canada.
